CONLAMIC Endorses Nomination of Judge Sotomayor to US Supreme Court

Washington, DC - Today, the National Coalition of Latino Clergy & Christian Leaders (CONLAMIC) announced its endorsement of President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court, a measured jurist with bedrock family values and highly qualified for the United States Supreme Court.

"CONLAMIC leaders are delighted that Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who is currently Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, has been nominated to the Supreme Court of the United States," said Rev. Miguel Rivera, President of CONLAMIC.

Latino evangelicals who are members of CONLAMIC have in the past carried out careful and detailed review of other candidates to the Supreme Court and carefully vetted then Judges Roberts and Alito before their confirmation to the Court. They fully supported their nominations because they possessed strong the qualifications, restrained judicial temperament, and respect in their approach to their judicious approach to and application of the law. They find that Judge Sotomayor to be highly qualified for the U.S. Supreme Court and have endorsed her nomination.

In endorsing the nomination of Judge Sotomayor, we have carefully reviewed the Judge’s numerous decisions and statements. Federal courts of appeals resolve conflicting opinions and decisions rendered by district courts within their Circuit. CONLAMIC's review discloses that regardless of the outcome of the decision, Judge Sotomayor follows well-established precedent in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. In strictly adhering to precedent, regardless of result, Judge Sotomayor demonstrated that she is not a judicial activist who seeks to impose a particular outcome based on her beliefs, but rather a judicious jurist who applies established law to the cases before her. CONLAMIC is confident that she has a restrained approach to the law.

The particularity and richness of Judge Sotomayor own life experience brings a perspective that is currently absent from the Court. Judge Sotomayor would become, in fact, the most experienced judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court in decades. Her experience as a trial court judge, as a prosecuting attorney, and as a partner at a commercial law firm in New York would make her the most experienced litigator of the court, thereby bringing an attorney and judge with real world experience and common sense application of the law to the Supreme Court.

Judge Sotomayor has an impressive track record of bipartisan support. She was nominated as a federal district court judge by a Republican President and confirmed by a Democratic–controlled Senate. She was later elevated to the federal court of appeals by a Democratic President and confirmed by a Republican-controlled Senate. While some have sought to play this down, it is nonetheless impressive in an era of bitter partisan division.

Finally, her dedication to her community and to her family underscores bedrock principles that we, as an organization, strongly encourage members of the church and Latino community to emulate. As an organization with conservative values, CONLAMIC has given this matter careful, detailed and fair review.

"We deem Judge Sonia Sotomayor highly qualified to be a Supreme Court Justice, and we call on the U.S. Senate to timely confirm her nomination prior to the August break so that Judge Sotomayor may join the Court prior to the October Term," said Rev. Rivera.
