Time for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Rev. Miguel Rivera, President of CONLAMIC, met with Senator John McCain in Washington last week to discuss a collaborative effort in the push for a workable solution to immigration reform in the United States. Both agreed to join forces to support President Bush in the fight to increase border security and find a workable solution to the estimated 12 million undocumented workers living in the U.S.

“The removal of a few key Republican members of the House on Election Day brought us renewed hope for resuscitation of a proposal for comprehensive immigration reform,” said Rev. Miguel Rivera.

“Now that Democrats control the house there is a new opportunity to gather the support needed to move forward toward a solution that will both strengthen our borders and obtain a guest worker program and a pathway to citizenship,” said Rev. Rivera.

The meeting between Senator McCain and Rev. Rivera is an important step toward moving a full speed to restart the fight for a solution to the immigration crisis. Perhaps this time we will see a more bi-partisan effort that will demonstrate the compassionate conservatism that the majority of Americans have wanted to see in Congress and for immigration reform.
